Here are some good examples of citation builders. Be aware, you should always check your citations after generating them through these tools. Sometimes, there are errors!

This guide will provide some of the best sources for finding the news.  You will find a list of in-print and electronic resources for local news, national news, international news and historical news. If you have any questions please contact a librarian or the research services for assistance. 

Current print issues of local and national newspapers in the library 

Issues of the following newspapers are available and are located in the “Popular Reading” area until replaced by microfilm. Non local newspapers arrive a few days after publication.

MLA – Citing an Article in a Newspaper

Cite by listing the article's author, putting the title of the article in quotations marks, and italicizing the periodical title. Follow with the date of publication. Remember to abbreviate the month.  If there is more than one edition available for that date (as in an early and late edition of a newspaper), identify the edition following the date (e.g., 17 May 1987, late ed.).

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year:

   pages. Medium of publication.

EXAMPLE:

Brubaker, Bill. "New Health Center Targets County's Uninsured

   Patients." Washington Post 24 May 2007: LZ01. Print.

OR

Krugman, Andrew. "Fear of Eating." New York Times 21 May 2007 late ed.:

   A1. Print.

If the newspaper is a less well-known or local publication, include the city name and state in brackets after the title of the newspaper.

EXAMPLE:

Behre, Robert. "Presidential Hopefuls Get Final Crack at Core of S.C.

   Democrats." Post and Courier [Charleston, SC] 29 Apr. 2007: A11.

   Print.

OR

Trembacki, Paul. "Brees Hopes to Win Heisman for Team." Purdue

APA – Citing an Article in a Newspaper

APA style dictates that authors are named last name followed by initials; publication year goes between parentheses, followed by a period. The title of the article is in sentence-case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. The periodical title is run in title case, and is followed by the volume number which, with the title, is also italicized. Unlike other periodicals, p. or pp. precedes page numbers for a newspaper reference in APA style. Single pages take p., e.g., p. B2; multiple pages take pp., e.g., pp. B2, B4 or pp. C1, C3-C4.

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of

   article.Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number),

   pages.

EXAMPLE:

Schultz, S. (2005, December 28). Calls made to strengthen state energy

   policies. The Country Today, pp. 1A, 2A.

Note: Because of issues with html coding, the listings below using brackets contain spaces that are not to be used with your listings. Use a space as normal before the brackets, but do not include a space following the bracket.
