This guide lists sources of information on patents, trademarks, and copyright. The page is focused on U.S. intellectual property (IP), but includes selected information on non-U.S. IP law. If you have a question, please contact the librarian by using the information on the right.

    Patents and Trademarks

    PubWEST: Advanced Patent Searching

    Available to the public only at UNR and other Patent & Trademark Resource Centers, PubWEST is an expert search tool, including the following components:

    §  US Patents (USPT): Full text of most patents issued from 1971 - present; patent number, publication date, and current classification information for all patents 1790 - present; titles of utility patents from 1920 - 1970 are also available in this file.

    §  US Optical Character Recognition (USOCR): Scanned, unedited copies of US patents issued between 1920-1970 and those from 1971-1976 missing from the USPT file.

    §  Pre Grant Publications (PGP): utility patent applications that have been pending for at least 18 months.

    §  European Patents (EPAB): published documents from the European Patent Office (EPO), selected EPO member countries (Switzerland, Germany, France, Great Britain), the US Patent Office, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Starting dates for individual countries vary.

    §  Japanese Patents (JPAB): English language abstracts of unexamined Japanese patent applications, starting October, 1976.
